Emanuel Bowen Collection

Emanuel Bowen (1714-1767) was an English engraver and mapmaker. He was born in London and apprenticed to a copperplate engraver, Thomas Bowles, at the age of 15. He worked as an engraver for various publishers including John Bowles, Thomas Jefferys and William Faden. His maps were highly detailed and included historical notes, illustrations of coats of arms, vignettes of buildings or monuments and decorative cartouches. He also engraved plates for books such as The Natural History of Carolina by Mark Catesby (1731). Emanuel Bowen is best known for his large-scale maps which provided the most accurate information available at the time on Britain's American colonies. His work has been described as "the finest achievement in British cartography before 1800".
