He was born in Paris and studied at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, where he became a professor of zoology in 1848. He is best known for his work on the classification of fishes, which he published in several volumes between 1866 and 1883. He also wrote extensively on other topics such as invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.
