George Baxter Collection

George Baxter was an English artist and printer who is best known for his invention of the Baxter Process, a method of colour printing. He was born in 1804 and started his career as an engraver before moving on to lithography. In 1835, he developed the Baxter Process which allowed him to print multiple colours on a single plate. This process revolutionized colour printing and made it much easier and cheaper to produce multi-coloured prints. His work was highly sought after by publishers, advertisers, booksellers, and others who wanted to create colourful images at a fraction of the cost of hand-colouring them. He died in 1867 but his legacy lives on through his invention which is still used today in many forms of printing.
