George N. Barnard Collection

George N. Barnard (1819-1902) was an American photographer known for his images of the Civil War. He began his career as a portrait photographer in New York before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he opened a studio in 1858. During the Civil War, Barnard documented the conflict from both sides and was appointed official photographer of the Union Army by General William T. Sherman. His photographs provide a unique visual record of Sherman's march through Georgia and South Carolina during the war's final months and are some of the most iconic images from that period. After the war, Barnard continued to take photographs throughout America until his death in 1902 at age 83. His work is recognized as one of America's earliest photojournalism and has been exhibited widely since its rediscovery in 1969.
