John Chester Buttre Collection

John Chester Buttre (1821-1893) was an American artist and engraver. He is best known for his illustrations of the Civil War and his portraits of prominent figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee. Buttre also created a number of landscape paintings and etchings, including views of Niagara Falls, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and the Catskills in New York State. He was a founding member of the National Academy of Design in 1826, where he served as president from 1871 to 1873. His works are held in numerous public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Library Of Congress Prints And Photographs Division, The Smithsonian Institution Archives Of American Art And The Brooklyn Museum Of Art.
