David Adolph Constant Artz Collection

David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) was a Dutch painter and art historian. He is best known for his work in the field of Dutch Golden Age painting, particularly his research on the works of Frans Hals. He also wrote extensively about Rembrandt and other 17th century Dutch painters. Artz was born in Amsterdam and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts there before becoming a professor at the University of Amsterdam. He wrote several books on art history, including The Dutch School of Painting (1876), which became an important reference for later generations of art historians. His research helped to revive interest in 17th century Dutch painting and he is credited with helping to establish it as an important area of study within art history.
