George French Angas Collection

George French Angas was a 19th-century British artist and naturalist. He is best known for his vivid watercolour paintings of the Australian Aborigines and New Zealand Maori people. He was born in London in 1822, the son of a wealthy banker. In 1844, he travelled to South Australia where he studied the local flora and fauna, as well as sketching scenes from Aboriginal life. His work was highly praised by critics and collectors alike, with his works being exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He also wrote several books on natural history, including The Savage Life of South Australia (1847) which contained many illustrations from his travels. Angas' work has been credited with helping to raise awareness of Indigenous cultures around the world during this time period.
