James Abbe was an American photographer and photojournalist who captured the world of art, politics, and celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s. He was born in Vermont in 1883 and began his career as a portrait photographer for Vogue magazine. Abbe traveled extensively throughout Europe, photographing some of the most famous figures of the time including Sigmund Freud, Josephine Baker, Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, George Bernard Shaw and many more. His work appeared regularly in magazines such as Vanity Fair and Harper's Bazaar. Abbe was also known for his documentary photography during the Spanish Civil War where he captured images of both sides of the conflict.
