EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in the skies above Kandahar Airfield, Helmand, Afghanistan. The image showcases a Harrier GR9 aircraft from 1 (F) Squadron as it gracefully takes off into the vast Middle Eastern sky. Symbolizing the end of an era, this particular squadron marked the conclusion of Harrier air operations in Afghanistan in 2009. For five years, RAF and Royal Navy pilots courageously engaged with the Taliban during Operation Herrick. As the oldest fighter squadron in the RAF at 97 years old, their return home on July 1st was a momentous occasion. The departure of these skilled aviators made way for new forces to take charge. Tornado GR4s from 12 Squadron based at RAF Lossiemouth were ready to continue supporting military efforts on Afghan soil. This powerful photograph not only represents bravery and dedication but also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by British forces throughout this campaign. The Harrier GR9 stands tall as a symbol of offensive power and precision equipment utilized by these exceptional pilots. As we reflect upon this significant chapter in history, let us honor those who served and recognize their unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms both at home and abroad.
