Royal Navy Merlin Helicopter Launching a Training Torpedo

A Royal Navy Merlin helicopter with 829 Naval Air Squadron launches a dummy training torpedo off the Cornish coast.
Merlin helicopters from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose have been busy near their West Cornwall Base getting to grips with the launching of practice torpedoes.
The Submarine hunting aircraft, who have recently returned from a highly successful Deep Blue deployment in the Eastern Atlantic and off the south coast of Cornwall, are developing their weapon delivery skills. Dropping dummy training torpedoes in the Falmouth Bay area, the weapons are replicas of the real sub-busting Sting Ray lightweight torpedoes. Both Weapons Engineers and Aircrew are required to carry out the same procedures and drill as if live weapons were being used.
Merlin Mk 2 can carry up to four sub-seeking weapons, two either side of the aircrafts fuselage. Once launched, the intelligent Sting Ray searches out its intended target, even in shallow water. It is electrically powered and features an active homing head with an autonomous operation mode. Real-time information and positive identification against even small, elusive targets ensures the single shaped charge warhead will effectively knock out any submarine.
It is planned to conduct up to 20 torpedo releases a year in the Bay area loading the dummy torpedoes at RNAS Culdrose and once released being recovered by SERCO, using boats working out of Falmouth. EDITORS COMMENTS

In this photo print, a Royal Navy Merlin helicopter from 829 Naval Air Squadron is seen launching a training torpedo off the picturesque Cornish coast. The skilled crew members of the helicopter have been honing their weapon delivery skills near their base at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose. Fresh from a successful Deep Blue deployment in the Eastern Atlantic and along Cornwall's southern coast, these submarine hunting aircraft are now focused on perfecting their technique for launching practice torpedoes. These dummy training torpedoes are exact replicas of the powerful Sting Ray lightweight torpedoes used to neutralize enemy submarines. Both Weapons Engineers and Aircrew diligently follow strict procedures and drills as if they were handling live weapons during these exercises in Falmouth Bay. The Merlin Mk 2 helicopters have the capacity to carry up to four sub-seeking weapons, positioning two on each side of its fuselage. Once released into the water, these intelligent Sting Ray torpedoes autonomously seek out their intended targets with precision, even in shallow waters. Equipped with real-time information and advanced identification capabilities, they effectively eliminate any lurking submarine threat using a single shaped charge warhead. To enhance proficiency, approximately 20 torpedo releases are planned annually in Falmouth Bay. RNAS Culdrose loads the dummy torpedoes onto the helicopters before launch while SERCO ensures safe recovery using boats operating out of Falmouth. This rigorous training ensures that Royal Navy personnel remain prepared for any future challenges at sea without compromising commercial activities in the area.
