EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Timber Rattlesnakes - Emerging from Hibernation at Den Site" 2. Description: This photograph showcases a group of Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) as they emerge from their hibernation den site in the northeastern United States. As venomous pitvipers, Timber Rattlesnakes are widely distributed throughout the eastern part of the country, but populations are declining due to habitat loss and direct persecution. Protected by law in eight of the 32 states where they occur, these snakes are an essential component of the region's biodiversity. 3. Appearance: Timber Rattlesnakes come in two distinct color morphs: black and yellow. The female in this image is shown with her live litters, which she bears every 3-5 years, numbering between 3-14 young. These snakes rely heavily on rocky, south-facing outcrops for basking, as they are ectothermic (cold-blooded) creatures. 4. Behavior and Diet: Timber Rattlesnakes are generally mild-mannered in comparison to other rattlesnake species. They primarily feed on small mammals, capturing their prey through ambush. 5.
