Gilbert's Dragon
Kupungarri, Kimberleys, Western Australia
Lophognathus gilberti
Commonly known as Ta-Ta lizard because after every short dash it waves a front leg in a circular manner just as if waving goodbye. The purpose of legwaving is unclear, perhaps communicating with conspecifics or as a distraction display. It is abundant across north-west Australia. It eats invertebrates such as ants grasshoppers and dragonflies. Males but not females are territorial defending a daily activity area.

Ta-Ta Lizard - The Friendly Farewell Waver!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. Say hello to DH-3459, also known as Gilbert's Dragon or the Ta-Ta Lizard! This charming reptile from north-west Australia has a unique way of saying goodbye after every short dash it takes - by waving its front leg in a circular manner! It's like having your own personal farewell party wherever you go! Scientists are still puzzled about the purpose of this adorable leg-waving habit. Is it a form of communication with fellow lizards? Or perhaps just a clever distraction technique? Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure - this little lizard knows how to make an exit! Abundant across the Kimberleys region in Western Australia, our Ta-Ta friend enjoys feasting on invertebrates like ants, grasshoppers, and dragonflies. But here's an interesting fact: only male Ta-Ta lizards are territorial and defend their daily activity area. Talk about being protective of their personal space! So if you ever find yourself exploring Kupungarri or any other part of north-west Australia, keep an eye out for these wave-loving wonders. Just remember not to mistake them for someone bidding you farewell at first glance! And don't worry; we won't mention anything about commercial use because this print by Don Hadden is all about appreciating wildlife and enjoying nature's quirky creations.
