Tursiops truncatus
The calf was born on July 20th 2010 at 15:30. At birth its weight was roughly 15 kg and 1m in length. The mother is Onda, a 14 year old female from Cuba but guest of the grand Mediterraneo Dolphinarium since 2003. The father is Lucas, a 12 year old also from Cuba. Gestation in this species of dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is approximately 12 months. Nursing can last up two years but already after 4 months-old the calf can start to feed himself setting in motion the weaning process.
This forms part of a species propagation programme in a monitored environment that Marineland Ltd, the company that runs the Mediterraneo Marine Park, has planned in Malta for some time.

Pure Bliss - A Mother's Love in the Deep Blue Sea
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this heartwarming snapshot, a Bottlenose Dolphin mother and her adorable newborn calf share an intimate moment as they swim together off the coast of Malta. The bond between them is undeniable, evident in their synchronized movements and playful interactions. The calf, born on July 20th, 2010 at precisely 15:30, weighed around 15 kg and measured approximately one meter in length. Its arrival brought joy to its proud parents - Onda, a spirited female from Cuba who has been a guest at the grand Mediterraneo Dolphinarium since 2003; and Lucas, a charismatic male also hailing from Cuba. This image captures not only the beauty of these magnificent creatures but also highlights the importance of species propagation programs conducted by Marineland Ltd. As part of their conservation efforts, they have meticulously monitored this pair within their controlled environment. Gestation for Tursiops truncatus lasts about twelve months before giving birth to these incredible beings. Although nursing can continue for up to two years, it's remarkable that even at just four months old, this little calf is already starting to feed itself – marking the beginning of its weaning process. So dive into this enchanting photograph by Augusto Leandro Stanzani and let it remind you of the pure bliss found in a mother's love undersea!
