Feathered Daredevils - Lammergeiers Take the Skydiving Game to New Heights!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this snapshot captured by John Cancalosi, we witness the awe-inspiring feeding habits of the elusive Bearded Vulture, also known as the Lammergeier. Hailing from Spain to Africa and beyond, these rare birds are making a triumphant comeback in the majestic Alps. With their beady eyes fixed on a juicy carcass below, these high-flying acrobats showcase their unique dining technique. Adults skillfully drop bones from great heights onto flat rocks, shattering them into bite-sized morsels for easier consumption. It's like watching an avian version of extreme skydiving! These magnificent creatures are true mountain dwellers and can often be found nesting in remote rocky cliffs or hidden caves. But it doesn't stop there – they're not afraid to spice things up with some polyandry! Talk about breaking societal norms. Their striking reddish hue is no accident either; it's earned through luxurious baths in iron-rich springs. Not only does this vibrant color make them stand out among their feathered friends, but it may also confer status within their community. As scavengers extraordinaire, Lammergeiers play a vital role in maintaining nature's balance by feasting on carrion left behind by other predators. They truly embody both predator and prey dynamics all at once! So next time you spot one of these daring daredevils soaring above your head
