Devils Marbles - a nearly perfectly circular shaped boulder of red granite is balanced on a hugh rock with a small crevice filled with water
Devils Marbles Conservation Area, Northern Territory, Australia
A spectacular formation of huge granite boulders spread across a wide shallow valley. They owe their creation to the circulation of day and night; respectively the very hot day temperatures and bitter cold desert nights. Because of those hugh differences in temperature; giant granite boulders expanded and shrinked in size continually. As a result the surfaces of these blocks flaked off like onion pellicles; and still does.

Nature's Balancing Act - A Marvelous Sight in the Australian Outback

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In the heart of Australia's Northern Territory lies a mesmerizing natural wonder - the Devils Marbles Conservation Area. Amongst this vast expanse, an extraordinary sight awaits those who venture into its depths. Captured by photographers Steffen & Alexandra Sailer, their print showcases a nearly perfect circle-shaped boulder of red granite delicately balanced on a colossal rock. What makes this scene even more enchanting is the small crevice filled with water nestled beneath. These magnificent granite boulders owe their existence to the relentless cycle of day and night in this arid desert landscape. The scorching heat during daylight hours causes them to expand, while bitterly cold nights force them to shrink. This constant fluctuation has led to layers peeling off these massive blocks like onion skins, creating a truly unique spectacle that continues to evolve. As you gaze upon this photograph, let your imagination run wild amidst these ancient formations scattered across the valley floor. Picture yourself standing among giants as you marvel at nature's delicate equilibrium and timeless beauty.
