Pygmaeus Collection

Pygmaeus is a genus of Vespertilionidae, a family of small mammals commonly known as vesper bats, and are found in Europe, Asia and North Africa. These bats have short ears and long tails that are usually covered with fur. They feed on insects and other small invertebrates at night, using echolocation to locate their prey. Pygmaeus species typically roost in caves or crevices during the day, emerging at night to hunt for food and can live up to 10 years in the wild and have been observed living up to 20 years in captivity. Their diet consists mainly of moths, beetles, flies and other flying insects but they may also consume fruit or nectar from flowers when available. Pygmaeus species are important pollinators for many plants as well as predators of insect pests that damage crops or spread disease-causing organisms such as mosquitoes or ticks.
