Collared Peccary Collection

Collared peccaries, also known as javelinas, are a species of mammal in the Tayassuidae family, and are found throughout Central and South America, as well as parts of the southwestern United States. Collared peccaries typically live in herds of up to 20 individuals and feed on a variety of fruits, nuts, roots, insects, and small animals. They have thick fur which is usually grayish-brown or black with white stripes along their back and sides. Collared peccaries have long snouts with sharp tusks used for digging up food sources as well as defending themselves against predators, and are highly social animals that communicate through vocalizations such as grunts and squeals to warn other members of their herd about potential danger. Although they can be aggressive when threatened or cornered, collared peccaries generally avoid humans unless provoked or disturbed by them.
