Lowland Tapir Collection

Lowland tapirs (Tapiridae) are mammals that belong to the family Tapiridae, and are found in Central and South America, mainly in tropical and subtropical forests. Lowland tapirs have a stocky body with short legs, a long snout, and small ears. Their fur is usually dark brown or black with white patches on their face, neck, chest and legs and can weigh up to 500 pounds and can reach lengths of up to 6 feet long, and are herbivores that feed on leaves, fruits, grasses and aquatic plants. They also use their snouts to dig for roots and tubers in the ground, and are solitary animals but will come together during mating season or when food is abundant.
