The spotted hyena is a large mammal found in Africa, the Middle East and India, and is the largest of the three species of hyenas, with males weighing up to 140 pounds and females up to 110 pounds, thick coat of fur that can range from yellowish-brown to grayish-brown in color, with black spots on its back and sides. Its head is large and round with a short muzzle, small ears, and long legs and has powerful jaws that can crush bones easily, and are social animals living in clans of up to 80 individuals led by an alpha female. They hunt cooperatively for food such as antelope, wildebeest calves or warthogs but also scavenge for carrion when available, and are known for their loud whooping calls which they use to communicate within their clan or warn other predators away from their territory.
