Minimus is a genus of Sciuridae mammals, commonly referred to as ground squirrels, and are native to North America and can be found in the western United States, Mexico, and Canada. They have long bodies with short legs and a bushy tail. Their fur is usually gray or brown in color with white patches on their face and chest. They eat a variety of plants, seeds, nuts, insects, and other small animals. They live in burrows that they dig themselves or use abandoned ones from other animals and can diurnal creatures that spend most of their time foraging for food during the day and sleeping at night, and are social animals that live in colonies with up to 30 individuals per colony. Minimus provide an important role in the ecosystem by dispersing seeds from plants they consume which helps promote plant growth throughout their habitat range.
