Atricapillus is a genus of Sciuridae mammals in the family of squirrels. It includes two species, the black-capped chickadee and the chestnut-backed chickadee. Both species are small birds with short tails and wings, weighing between 10 and 20 grams. They have a black cap on their heads, white cheeks, gray backs, and buffy underparts. The black-capped chickadee is found in North America from Alaska to Newfoundland while the chestnut-backed chickadee is found in western North America from British Columbia to northern California. These birds feed mainly on insects but also eat seeds and berries when available.
