Amoenus Collection

Amoenus is a genus of sciuridae mammals. It includes three species of ground squirrels, all found in western North America. The species are the California ground squirrel (A. Beecheyi), the Columbian ground squirrel (A. Columbianus) and the rock squirrel (A. Variegatus). All three species have a similar appearance, with a reddish-brown back and sides, white underparts, and a white stripe down their back from head to tail, and are diurnal animals that live in burrows or dens dug into the ground for shelter from predators and extreme weather conditions. They feed mainly on seeds, nuts, fruits and insects but will also eat small vertebrates such as lizards or mice if given the opportunity. An important part of its ecosystem as it helps disperse seeds which can lead to new plant growth in its habitat range.
