Alpine Marmot Collection

The Alpine Marmot (Marmota marmota) is a species of large ground squirrel native to the mountainous regions of Europe, and is one of the largest members of the Sciuridae family, reaching up to 60 cm in length and weighing up to 5 kg, thick fur coat that ranges from reddish-brown on its back to yellowish-white on its underside. Its diet consists mainly of grasses, herbs, and other vegetation found in its alpine habitat. In addition, it will also feed on small insects and larvae when available. During winter months, it hibernates underground for up to nine months at a time in burrows dug out by itself or other marmots. As an important part of the alpine ecosystem, they help disperse seeds through their droppings and provide food for predators such as foxes and eagles.
