Red kangaroo Collection

The red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is the largest of all kangaroo species and the largest marsupial in the world, and is found across mainland Australia, avoiding only the more fertile areas in the south, east coast and north, and are reddish-brown in colour with lighter grey underbellies and a distinctive white tail tip. They have long, powerful hind legs which they use to hop at speeds of up to 65km/h and are able to cover great distances with single leaps of up to 9m. Red kangaroos live in groups called mobs which can range from a few individuals up to hundreds. They feed mainly on grasses but also eat leaves, flowers and fruits when available. During hot weather they will rest during the day and become active at night when it is cooler. The red kangaroo plays an important role in its environment as it helps spread seeds through its droppings which help regenerate vegetation after bushfires or drought conditions.
