Southern Elephant Seal Collection

The Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina) is a large mammal in the Phocidae family of animals, and is the largest seal in the world, with males reaching up to 4.5 meters long and weighing up to 5,000 kilograms. The species has a wide distribution across sub-Antarctic islands and coasts of southern South America, Australia, and New Zealand, and are highly adapted for aquatic life with their streamlined body shape and webbed feet for swimming. Southern Elephant Seals have an impressive vocal repertoire that includes barks, grunts, snorts, growls and whistles used for communication between individuals as well as during mating rituals. They feed primarily on fish but also eat squid and krill when available. Females give birth to one pup per year after a 10-month gestation period which they nurse until weaning at around 8 weeks old before returning to sea themselves while their young remain on land until they are ready to hunt independently.
