Galßpagos Fur Seal Collection

The Galapagos Fur Seal (Arctocephalus galapagoensis) is a species of otariid mammal found on the Galapagos Islands and nearby areas, and are the only species of fur seal that inhabits the Eastern Pacific Ocean, and are considered to be one of the most threatened marine mammals in this region. The Galapagos Fur Seal is a large animal, reaching up to 1.8 meters in length and weighing up to 140 kilograms. They have a thick coat of brown fur with lighter patches on their face, chest and belly. These seals feed mainly on fish, squid, octopus and crustaceans found in their habitat. They breed during October-December each year, with females giving birth to one pup per litter after an 11-month gestation period. The population size has been decreasing due to human activities such as fishing and hunting for their fur; however conservation efforts have been successful in increasing numbers since they were first protected by law in 1959.
