Northern Tamandua Collection

The Northern Tamandua (Myrmecophagidae) is a species of anteater native to Central and South America, and is a medium-sized mammal, with an average length of about 1 meter, and weighing up to 11 kg. Its fur is yellowish-brown in color, with black stripes running along its back and sides and has long claws for digging into ant nests and termite mounds, as well as a long sticky tongue for catching insects. The Northern Tamandua feeds mainly on ants and termites, but will also eat other small invertebrates such as spiders, beetles, caterpillars, centipedes, scorpions, millipedes and snails, and are solitary animals that live in trees or burrows during the day time; at night they come out to feed on their insect prey. The Northern Tamandua is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide distribution range across Central and South America.
