Leucogaster Collection

Leucogaster is a genus of molossid mammals in the family Molossidae, and are found in Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia, and Madagascar. Leucogaster species have long ears, short fur and a black tail tip, and are small animals with an average body length of 8-10 inches and weigh between 4-6 ounces. They feed mainly on insects, but also eat fruits and seeds when available. Leucogaster species live in dry savannahs and grasslands where they can find plenty of food sources such as termites, beetles, ants, grasshoppers and other invertebrates. During the day they hide among rocks or burrow into the ground for protection from predators such as hawks or eagles. At night they come out to hunt for food or socialize with other members of their species. Leucogaster species are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as deforestation and agricultural expansion which has led to a decline in their population numbers over recent years.
