Cape Porcupine Collection

Cape Porcupines (Hystricidae) are large, burrowing mammals found in Africa and parts of the Middle East. They have a stocky body covered with long, coarse spines that can reach up to 12 inches in length. The spines are used for protection against predators and also help them dig burrows, and are herbivores, feeding on roots, tubers, bark and other vegetation. They live in small family groups of up to 10 individuals and spend much of their time foraging or resting in their underground burrows. They communicate through a variety of vocalizations including grunts, squeals and hisses, and are nocturnal animals that can live up to 20 years in the wild if they avoid predators such as lions or hyenas.
