Pygmy Hippopotamus Collection

The Pygmy Hippopotamus (Hippopotamidae) is a small mammal that belongs to the same family as the common hippo, and is native to West Africa and lives in dense rainforest habitats. Its body is much smaller than its cousin, measuring only about 1.5 meters long and weighing up to 150 kilograms. The Pygmy Hippo has a stocky build with short legs and a large head, which makes it look like a miniature version of its larger relative. Its coat is dark brown or black in color, and it has thick skin that helps protect it from predators. It feeds mainly on leaves, grasses, roots, fruits and aquatic plants found near rivers or streams in its habitat. In recent years, the species has become increasingly threatened due to habitat destruction and hunting for bushmeat by humans. Conservation efforts are underway to help protect this species from further decline in numbers.
