Spectabilis Collection

Spectabilis, also known as the banner-tailed kangaroo rat, is a species of heteromyidae mammal found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This species of rodent is characterized by its long tail with a white tip, hence its name and has large hind feet and long claws for digging burrows. Its fur is grayish-brown on top with white underneath. It feeds mainly on seeds and other plant material but will also eat insects when available and can nocturnal animals that live in colonies of up to 30 individuals in complex burrow systems that they construct themselves, and are important seed dispersers and help to maintain healthy ecosystems by controlling pest populations such as grasshoppers and beetles, and are considered vulnerable due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as agriculture, urbanization, and mining operations which have resulted in their population decline over the past few decades.
