Forest Dormouse Collection

The Forest Dormouse (Gliridae) is a small mammal found in deciduous and mixed forests across Europe and parts of Asia, and is a nocturnal species, spending its days sleeping in tree holes or other sheltered places. Its fur ranges from grey to reddish-brown, with white underparts, and it has large ears and eyes adapted for night vision. The Forest Dormouse feeds mainly on nuts, seeds, fruits, insects and fungi, and is an agile climber that can leap up to two metres between branches. During the winter months it hibernates in underground burrows or tree cavities where temperatures remain stable throughout the year. The Forest Dormouse plays an important role in its ecosystem by dispersing seeds through its droppings and helping to control insect populations by eating them. Its population numbers are declining due to habitat destruction caused by deforestation and agricultural activities but conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline.
