Melanurus Collection

Melanurus is a genus of erethizontidae mammals, commonly known as the spiny tree-rats or porcupines, and are native to Central and South America and are found in tropical forests, grasslands, and savannas. Melanurus porcupines have a long body covered in thick spines that protect them from predators. They have short legs and feet with long claws for climbing trees. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, nuts, bark, roots, and leaves, and are nocturnal animals that spend their days sleeping in hollow logs or burrows they dig themselves. During the night they forage for food while using their sharp hearing to detect predators nearby. The lifespan porcupines can reach up to 10 years in captivity but is usually much shorter in the wild due to predation by other animals such as jaguars or pumas.
