Asian Elephant Collection

The Asian Elephant (Elephantidae) is a species of mammal in the family Elephantidae, and is native to South and Southeast Asia, and is the largest land animal on the continent, distinctive body shape, with its large ears, long trunk, tusks and four legs. Its skin color ranges from light gray to dark brown and has two subspecies: the Indian elephant and the Sri Lankan elephant. The Asian elephant lives in a variety of habitats including grasslands, forests, wetlands and scrublands, and are herbivores that feed on grasses, leaves, bark and roots as well as crops such as sugarcane or bananas when available, and are highly social animals that live in herds of up to 30 individuals led by an older female known as a matriarch, and are threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation for agriculture or urban development as well as poaching for their ivory tusks or meat for consumption or use in traditional medicine remedies. Conservation efforts include protecting their habitats through legislation and creating sanctuaries where they can live safely away from human interference.
