Gardneri is a genus of echimyidae mammals, commonly known as spiny rats, and are found in Central and South America and are characterized by their long, thin bodies with short legs, large ears, and long tails. They have thick fur that is usually grayish-brown in color with white or yellowish stripes on the back. Gardneri feed mainly on fruits, seeds, insects and other small animals. They live in burrows dug into the ground or under logs or rocks and can solitary animals that come together only to mate during the breeding season which occurs between March and April. They have a lifespan of up to five years in captivity but may live longer in the wild and can threatened by habitat destruction due to deforestation for agricultural purposes as well as hunting for food or sport by humans. Conservation efforts such as habitat protection should be implemented to ensure their survival for future generations.
