Island Fox Collection

The Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis) is a species of fox native to six of the eight Channel Islands off the coast of California, and is one of the smallest foxes in North America, and is believed to have evolved from mainland gray foxes that were brought to the islands by humans thousands of years ago. The Island Fox has adapted well to its island environment, with a diet consisting mainly of fruits, insects, and small mammals. It also has smaller ears and shorter legs than other fox species. The Island Fox was listed as an endangered species in 2004 due to predation by golden eagles introduced to some islands by humans. Conservation efforts have been successful in restoring populations on four out of six islands where they are found today.
