Virginia Opossum Collection

The Virginia Opossum (Didelphidae) is a small mammal native to North America, and is the only marsupial found in the United States and Canada, and it is also known as the "North American Opossum". The opossum has a grayish-white fur coat with black ears, tail, and feet. Its body length can range from 13 to 37 inches long and has an opposable thumb on its hind foot which helps it climb trees and grasp food items. The opossum is an omnivore that eats fruits, vegetables, insects, eggs, carrion, small mammals and birds. It also scavenges for food in garbage cans or compost piles. During cold weather months they may seek shelter in barns or other structures where they can find warmth and safety from predators such as foxes or coyotes, and are nocturnal animals that prefer to stay hidden during daylight hours but will come out at night when food sources are more abundant.
