The Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Delphinidae) is a species of mammal found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and is one of the most widely distributed cetaceans, with a population estimated to be over 600,000 individuals. The dolphin has an average length of 2-3 meters and can weigh up to 300 kg and has a grayish-blue dorsal side with lighter sides and belly, along with a white patch on its throat. Its diet consists mainly of fish, squid, octopus, shrimp, crabs and other small marine animals. The Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin is highly social; it forms large pods that can contain up to several hundred individuals foraging for food or playing together and are known for their intelligence; they have been observed using tools such as sponges to protect their sensitive snouts while searching for food on the ocean floor. This species is currently listed as “Data Deficient” by IUCN due to lack of information about its population size and trends in different parts of its range.
