Nine-banded Armadillo Collection

The Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypodidae) is a small mammal found throughout the Americas and has a distinctive armor-like shell made up of nine bands, hence its name, and is an insectivore, feeding mainly on ants and other small invertebrates. Its body temperature is regulated by its shell which helps it to conserve energy and remain active during the day or night. The armadillo can also jump 3–4 feet in the air when startled, and can even curl into a ball for protection from predators, and are solitary animals but will sometimes form small groups when foraging for food or migrating to new areas and are known to dig burrows in search of food, shelter from weather extremes and predators, as well as laying their eggs in these burrows. The Nine-banded Armadillo plays an important role in controlling insect populations and helping to keep ecosystems healthy by consuming large numbers of insects each day.
