Muskrat Collection

Muskrats (Cricetidae) are semi-aquatic rodents found throughout North America. They have a thick, brown fur coat and webbed hind feet that make them excellent swimmers, and are omnivorous, eating both plants and animals such as clams, frogs, fish and crayfish. They build burrows in the banks of streams or ponds to provide shelter from predators and the elements. Muskrats also construct lodges out of vegetation that can be up to 6 feet high and 10 feet wide. These lodges provide protection from predators as well as a place for muskrats to raise their young and can live up to 4 years in the wild, but their population is threatened by habitat destruction caused by human activities such as agriculture and urbanization.
