Macronyx Collection

Macronyx is a genus of Cricetidae mammals, commonly known as African grassland finches, and are found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal east to Ethiopia and south to Angola. Macronyx species have a distinctive plumage pattern, with a black head and chest, white belly and flanks, and yellowish-brown wings. They feed mainly on seeds but will also take insects when available. Macronyx species are monogamous breeders that build cup-shaped nests in tall grasses or shrubs near water sources. The female lays two to four eggs which she incubates for 12–14 days before they hatch. Macronyx species are social birds that often form large flocks outside the breeding season and can be seen in open savannahs, woodlands and wetlands where they forage for food on the ground or low vegetation.
