Gelada Collection

Gelada (Cercopithecidae) are mammals that belong to the Old World monkey family, and are found in the highlands of Ethiopia, where they inhabit rocky cliffs and grassy plateaus. Geladas have a distinctive appearance, with a long mane of hair on their heads and backs. They also have bright red chests and bellies, which make them stand out from other primates. Geladas live in large groups of up to 500 individuals, which is unusual for primates. They spend most of their time grazing on grasses and herbs while sitting upright on their hind legs. During the day they rest in small groups or alone in caves or crevices among the rocks. At night they sleep together in large sleeping parties that can contain up to 100 individuals, and are an important species for conservation efforts due to their unique behavior and habitat requirements; however, human activities such as overgrazing threaten their populations across Ethiopia's highlands.
