Vicuna Collection

Vicuna are a species of South American camelid mammals, and are the smallest of the four wild South American camelids, with an average weight of about 90 pounds and a shoulder height between 3-4 feet. Vicunas inhabit the high Andes mountains in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and northern Chile. They have thick coats that range from light brown to dark brown in color and can be up to 10 inches long. The fur is highly prized for its softness and warmth, making it an expensive material used in luxury clothing items such as coats and scarves, and are herbivores that feed on grasses, shrubs and other vegetation found in their natural habitat. They live in herds of up to 20 individuals led by a dominant male who defends his territory against other males by fighting or chasing them away from the herd's grazing area, and are protected under Peruvian law due to their endangered status caused by overhunting for their fur during the 1970s-1980s period.
