Takin Collection

Takin are large, hoofed mammals native to the eastern Himalayas. They have a thick, shaggy coat and long horns that curve backward and can herbivores and feed on grasses, leaves, twigs, and bark. They live in small herds of up to 15 individuals and migrate seasonally in search of food. They have a strong social structure with males dominating the group. Females give birth to one calf at a time after an 8-month gestation period. The calves stay with their mothers for up to two years before joining another herd or becoming solitary adults and can threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation as well as poaching for their meat and horns which are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Conservation efforts include protecting remaining habitats from human activity as well as captive breeding programs in zoos around the world.
