Steenbok Collection

Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris) are small antelope mammals in the Bovidae family, and are native to Africa and can be found in grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands. They have a reddish-brown coat with white underparts, a short tail, and long ears. Males have horns that curve backwards from their heads, and are solitary animals that feed mainly on grasses but also eat fruits, leaves, buds, and insects and can active during the day but will rest in thick vegetation during the heat of the day or when threatened by predators such as lions or hyenas. Breeding occurs year-round with females giving birth to one calf after a gestation period of six months. The young remain hidden for several weeks before joining their mother's group at around two months old. Steenbok live up to 10 years in the wild and can be found in protected areas throughout Africa where they play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through grazing activities.
