Sitatunga Collection

The Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii) is a species of antelope found in Central and East Africa, and is a member of the Bovidae family, which includes cattle, goats, sheep, and other hoofed mammals. The Sitatunga has long legs that allow it to walk through swamps and wetlands with ease. Its coat is reddish-brown with white stripes running along its sides. The males have spiraled horns that can reach up to 40 inches in length while the females are hornless, and are herbivores and feed mainly on aquatic plants such as water lilies, grasses, sedges, herbs and fruits. They live in small herds of up to 10 individuals led by a dominant male, and are shy animals but can become aggressive when threatened or disturbed by humans or predators such as lions or hyenas. Conservation efforts have been successful in some areas but their population continues to decline due to habitat loss from human activities such as farming and logging.
