They have a grayish-brown coat with white patches on their throat, chest, and belly. Males can reach up to 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 400 pounds. They feed mainly on grasses, leaves, fruits, and flowers but will also eat insects when available and can social animals that live in herds of 10-20 individuals led by a dominant male. They communicate through vocalizations such as grunts and snorts as well as scent marking with their urine or dung piles. They have few natural predators due to their size but can be hunted for sport or meat by humans in some areas of India where they are not protected by law.
