European Mantid Collection

The European Mantid is a species of praying mantis native to Europe, and is one of the largest species of mantids in the world, growing up to 8 cm in length. The adult a green or brown body with yellow stripes running along its sides and wings that are held outstretched when at rest. Its head is triangular with large eyes and it has long, spiny legs for grasping prey. The female European Mantid lays her eggs in a foam-like mass which she attaches to plants or other objects near her habitat. When hatched, the nymphs look similar to adults but are much smaller and lack wings until they reach maturity. These insects feed on other insects such as flies, grasshoppers, crickets and caterpillars as well as small vertebrates like lizards and frogs if they can catch them, and are beneficial predators that help keep insect populations under control in gardens and fields throughout Europe.
