Squash Bug Collection

Squash bugs (Anasa tristis) are a species of Hemiptera insects that feed on the leaves and stems of squash and pumpkins, and are usually found in gardens, fields, and other areas where these plants grow. The adult squash bug is about 5/8 inch long with a dark brown or black body and has a flat back with two orange stripes running down its sides. The immature stages are wingless and have an orange-yellow coloration and can cause significant damage to their host plants by sucking out the sap from the leaves, stems, and fruit, resulting in wilting or death of the plant parts they feed on. Control measures include removing infested plants, handpicking adults and nymphs from plants, using insecticides or traps to reduce populations, rotating crops to avoid continuous infestation of squash bugs in one area, as well as planting resistant varieties of squash or pumpkin varieties that can tolerate some feeding by these insects.
