The South American Darter has an elongated body with a long, pointed snout and large eyes. Its body is covered in small scales and its coloration ranges from olive green to brownish-gray with yellowish spots on its sides and can reach up to 20 inches in length and weigh up to 4 pounds. This species feeds on small fish, crustaceans, insects, mollusks, amphibians and aquatic plants, and are found in freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams and lakes throughout much of South America including Brazil, Argentina and Peru. The South American Darter is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List due to its wide range across the continent but it may be threatened by habitat destruction or pollution from human activities such as agriculture or industry.
